Legal Secretary - Junior Level

Prepares and types legal and administrative correspondence and documents, maintains legal files, prepares timesheets, communicates with clients, opposing counsel, courts, agencies and the general public.  Works under close supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Experience and Education  Graduation from high school or equivalent.  Graduation from a legal secretary program is preferred.   1-3 years' experience working with legal documents.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  Knowledge of legal practices and terminology.  Knowledge of spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.   Skill in typing and in the use of guides and reference materials.  Ability to coordinate work activities, prepare legal correspondence and documents, transcribe dictation, organize and maintain files and records and communicate effectively in a business environment. 

 

 

Legal Secretary - Associate Level

Performs moderately complex legal secretarial work. Prepares and types legal and administrative correspondence and documents, maintains legal files, prepares timesheets, communicates with clients, opposing counsel, courts, agencies and the general public. May train and/or supervise others. Works under moderate supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Experience and Education  Minimum of 3 years' experience as a legal secretary.  Some college education is preferred.   Attends continuing legal education or law-related seminars.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  Knowledge of legal practices and terminology.  Knowledge of spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar. Skill in typing and in the use of reference materials. Organized and detail oriented with the ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously.  Ability to coordinate work activities, prepare legal correspondence and documents, transcribe dictation, organize and maintain files and records and communicate effectively in a business environment. 

 

Legal Secretary - Partner Level

Performs complex legal secretarial work at the partner level. Prepares and types legal and administrative correspondence and documents, maintains legal files, prepares timesheets, communicates with clients, opposing counsel, courts, agencies and the general public. May train and/or supervise others. Works under general supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Experience and Education  Extensive experience as a legal secretary.  Stable work history.  4-year college degree is preferred.   Attends continuing legal education or law-related seminars.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  In-depth knowledge of legal terminology, court rules and procedures.   Flexible and solutions-oriented with the ability to work under pressure.  Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills.  Ability to work independently or in a team.  Understanding of basic business relationships and confidentiality principles.  Proficiency in typing and advanced software functions. Ability to train and/or supervise others, coordinate work activities, prepare legal correspondence and documents, transcribe dictation, interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and to organize and maintain files and records.
